Mind Map- Wednesday 28th of September

AG1086A Idea 2- Wednesday 28th of September

The second idea I have for my honours project is based are the same area of research.  For my second idea I have come up with a separate way to present my work practically.  The plan is to compose a peice(s) of music based around the results of my research in the hope that it can help with concentration and appeal to the wider audience.   What I will be looking at is-

Genre
Tempo
Structure
Instrumentation
Volume Levels
Melody
The use of vocals/lyrics

The aim is to try and pinpoint what it is about certain genres of music that help people conentrate and learn and create something that todays younger generation can relate to.

AG1086A Concept Devolpoment

Tuesday 27th September- Concept Development.

Spent today's class discussing in groups what inspires and motivates us when it comes to creating audio.  After brainstorming everything individually we discussed how we can use our inspirations in relevance to our own individual projects.

After mapping out everyones ideas I now have a better idea about how I am going to look at creating the practical side of my project.

My main influence for doing this research stems back to my time at school and even during the HND course.  I've always had a slight problem when it comes to concentrating on revision and researching and always found music to be the one things that made the most boring task more bearable.  I've always found that pop, rock, blues, jazz and folk genres helped me the most when it came to subjects likes maths, physics or digital audio theory etc and that's the big inspiration behind me wanting to use these kind of genres when it comes to composing for my project.

One of my biggest inspirations in terms of songwriting is John Mayer.  The thing I like about John Mayer is his ability to write pop, rock, acoustic and blues music which is a diversity I myself want to enhance as a songwriter.

This is John Mayer's version of the blues classic Crossroads.  With this song its the tempo and the melody that captures my attention and it songs like this that really inspire me.

This is an example of another John Mayer track but this time it is an example off one of his acoustic songs Stop This Train-

Although this is acoustic it has the same values and effect as the rock/blues genres.  Even though its just a guitar and vocals its still a good tempo and has a great hook/melody so it still catches your attention.

Another artist that inspires me is City and Colour.  This is his track What Makes a Man-

This again has a good steady tempo and great melodies but the main thing is that the song is constantly driving which is important when gearing people up to do a task that they may find boring without music.

AG1086A Idea 1

One of the ideas I have for this year is to research how music effects concentration levels and whether certain genres effect everyone differently.  For this I will carry out a couple tests using a heart monitor machine while volunteers try to do different tasks while listening to various music tracks.  By the end of the year I hope to develop an app that can help the end user to practice and enhance their concentration levels.  This is one of the ideas I have-

An App designed to enhance concentration and learning.

  • A Variety of games and puzzles designed to challenge the mind.
  • User can pick from a variety of
  1. Musical Genres
  2. Tempos
  3. Audio levels

The app will monitor the users time and coordination and will inform the user which style and tempo best suits there concentration levels.  From this they can use this app to better develop their learning and concentration skills.

The app will best suit students but can also be used on the older generation to help keep up concentration levels.

Instead of telling people how to concentrate better by stats and figures they can figure it out for themselves through what musical genre best suits them.

The Platforms I have in mind for this are ipads and if possible any type of smartphone.
